Black pols bolster Gillibrand

On Tuesday, the Black political leadership made its intentions quite clear to Blue Dog Dems and their backers with a stunning endorsement of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

"It is clear that our senator has built strong partnerships over the last year and has the right priorities for New York. She's spent time in communities across the state and understands exactly what so many New York families are going through right now," said Bill Thompson in his endorsement of Gillibrand.

Thompson made his endorsement following the Black, Puerto Rican and Hispanic Legislative Caucus this past weekend. Sen. Gillibrand made an impressive showing at the caucus weekend, observed Thompson, citing her tireless work to help struggling New Yorkers and to rebuild the economy.

"I am honored to have Bill Thompson's support," said Gillibrand. "He has been a an incredible champion for hardworking New Yorkers, and I look forward to continuing to work with him and other New York City leaders to move New York in the right direction. I pledge to always be a voice for every New York family in the U.S. Senate."

Manhattan Democrats pledged their support and voted overwhelmingly for Gillibrand and Schumer for U.S. Senate.

"In just a short period of time, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has proven herself to be a smart, hardworking advocate for the people of New York. Together, with the veteran Senator Schumer, the people of New York have two strong, capable leaders fighting for them in Washington. The district leaders of Manhattan and I all feel confident that both senators will continue to fight tirelessly for all New Yorkers and the state's best interest. I enthusiastically endorse Senator Gillibrand and Senator Schumer," said New York County Democratic Party County Leader Keith L.T. Wright.

County Chair and District Leader Marc Landis said, "New York needs leaders like Senator Gillibrand, who is working with President Obama to pass health care reform that gets New York its fair share, provides coverage for 2.7 million New Yorkers who don't have coverage and lowers costs for all New Yorkers who do. We need Democratic leaders to stand up and support this president, not oppose him at every turn. That's why I'm supporting Senator Gillibrand."

"I am honored to have earned the endorsement of County Leader Wright and the New York County Democratic Committee. These dedicated public servants have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of all New Yorkers, to provide a voice to their concerns and to forge solutions to the challenges they face. I have been proud to work with them over the past year to rebuild our economy and create good-paying jobs in our city, but we have a lot more work to do," Gillibrand stated.

Schumer said, "I am proud to accept the endorsement of the New York County Democratic Committee under the steady leadership of my friend and colleague, Assemblyman and Leader Keith L.T. Wright. You represent the best of what the Democratic Party is all about: participation from the ground up and policies grounded in the reality of helping all peoples to improve their lives."
