Breastfeeding 101: What Every Black Woman Needs to Know Part II

Kathi Barber, founder of the African American Breastfeeding Alliance and author of The Black Woman's Guide to Breastfeeding (Sourcebooks), shares these tips for breastfeeding success.
1. Prepare in Advance - Read as much as you can about breastfeeding before B-day (birth) comes. This includes books and brochures on how to breastfeed, pumping breastmilk, storing breastmilk, how to overcome breastfeeding challenges, nursing in public, etc.
2. Get Help - The more support you have during your breastfeeding experience, the better off you'll be. It's important to have your spouse/partner on-board with your choice to breastfeed. Studies have shown that the more support a woman has during breastfeeding increases her chances of breastfeeding longer and more successfully. As your OB for the number of a local breastfeeding support group and get the number of the hospital's Lactation Consultant. Then, use those numbers when you need to!
3. Be Resolute - To have a good breastfeeding experience, it's vital for you to resolve in your own mind that "I will succeed at breastfeeding." If you are resolute in your desire to have a good breastfeeding experience then you will be more mentally fit to face any challenges--social or physical--that may come your way.
