David Dinkins Tennis Club Labor Day Extravaganza
8/24/2011, 5:40 p.m.
David Dinkins, the tennis-loving former mayor of New York City and the man who led the charge for the Arthur Ashe Tennis Stadium that resides inside the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, will join members of his club and other tennis-playing juniors and seniors at their third annual Labor Day Weekend Extravaganza.
The event will be held at the Fred Johnson Playground and Park, 151st Street and Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard (Seventh Avenue), beginning at noon on Sept. 3 and 4. The facility is also referred to as "The Jungle," where Fred Johnson tutored tennis Hall of Famer Althea Gibson, enabling her to become the first African-American to win a major championship at Wimbledon.
The extravaganza, directed by former tennis coach at CCNY and Boys High and Syracuse University hoops legend Sam Penceal, features an agenda calling for fun and games, tennis drills for the juniors and younger and lots of food and drinks. The highlight of the weekend will be the Doubles Tournament.
