Harlem celebrates the holiday season

Several events were recently held around Harlem to welcome the holidays.

On Saturday, the Apollo Theater held "Holidays at the Apollo" in partnership with Coca-Cola. The free outdoor event featured various choirs from around the city and a appearance by Santa Claus with the Coca-Cola Holiday Caravan. A toy drive also took place to benefit HELP USA. There to spread the holiday spirit were Rep. Charlie Rangel and Assemblyman Keith Wright.

Making the season brighter, the 35th annual Harlem Tree Lighting Ceremony was held at the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building. The event, hosted by NY1 anchor Cheryl Wills, brought out residents and community leaders. Performances included the Impact Repertory Theatre, Vy Higginson Gospel for Teens and Alyson Williams.

Charity was in the air this past Tuesday night at Chocolat Restaurant at the second annual Harlem Winter Coat Drive hosted by S.W. Rosenburg and Landon Dais. Dozens of coats were collected at the event and were donated to New York Cares.
