The chair of the New York City Council Technology Committee, Councilman Fernando Cabrera, held a hearing on the benefits and potential harm of social media on May 13. The meeting discussed "over-usage" and the negative effects of social media on depression, bullying and inappropriate relationships in the age of Facebook and Twitter.
"Because we're relatively new to social media, it's important for us to gather as much information as possible and see how we can protect our children when protection is needed and expand where expansion may be beneficial," said Cabrera.
"We're still trying to figure out how the cell phone has affected our lives and we've had them for nearly 20 years," he continued. "It's never too early to start looking at a form of communication that might have a lasting impact on the rest of our lives."
