For the past 24 years, 125th Street in Harlem has temporarily shut down for a day in commemoration of Malcolm X's birthday. This May 19 was no different. Dunkin' Donuts, other chain stores and retail businesses closed from 1-4 p.m. to pay respect to the civil rights leader, who was assas- sinated at the age of 39.
A group of marchers held the annual "Shut 'Em Down March and Rally" along 125th Street against a backdrop of partially closed gates on some storefronts, while others gathered in front of the Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building to say happy birthday to Malcolm on what would have been his 86th birthday. Those in attendance included activists, grassroots groups, organizations and elected officials.
