Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott delivered a policy speech on enhancing parent involvement on Oct. 26. Walcott said he plans to open a parent academy, place emphasis on parent/teacher conferences, offer greater online assistance and include required standards for city schools to increase parent engagement.
"I want to state clearly," Walcott said in his speech, "what we mean by successful family engagement in New York City schools. Family engagement means informing and involving parents to get students on track for college and careers." Walcott said the New York City Department of Education has already appointed a new director for Family and Community Engagement, launched Parent 311 and created a parent coordinator position in every school toward its efforts to increase parental engagement.
