"The application for a stay of execution present to the court is denied" said the order of the Supreme Court.
At 7 P.M. the Supreme Court delayed the execution of Troy Davis but later released this statement lifting the delay and refusing to put a stay on the execution despite protests around the country and clear flaws in the case. Officials have just announced that at 11:08 P.M., four hours after his scheduled execution time, Troy Anthony Davis was executed in the state of Georgia.
"Because of the blatant racism and bias in the U.S. court system, I remain on death row in spite of a compelling case of my innocence. The truth is I am innocent!" said Troy Davis and reported earlier this month by the Amsterdam News.
In a last statement, announced later by media witnesses after the execution, Davis told the family of the man he is convicted of killing that he is sorry for their loss but urged them to "look deeper into this case so you can really find the truth."
New yorkers over social media have begun to call for a mass rally at Union Square Thursday at 5pm at Union Square.
Ben Jealous, President of the NAACP said, "I first met his sister 15 years ago and I had my doubts... But every year it became more and more clear that he was innocent." When asked by a MSNBC reporter if he thinks an innocent man was executed Jealous said, "Absolutely."
