Boys and Girls Club of Mount Vernon celebrates 100th anniversary

At the Rye Town Hilton in Rye Brook, N.Y., the late John R. Branca posthumously received the Denzel Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was accepted by his son Bill Branca.

WCBS Channel 2 television Meteorologist Elise Finch was the recipient of the Denzel Community Service Award. Rosemary Cornacchio, the president of the Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon, accepted the Lifetime Community Spirit Award on behalf of her organization.

YES Network Yankees announcer and former MLB all-star Ken Singleton received the Denzel Lifetime Achievement Award. New York State Sen. Malcolm A. Smith accepted the Denzel Historic Leadership Award, while boxing promoter Butch Lewis was posthumously awarded the Denzel Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was accepted by his daughter Sita Lewis.

Nearly 700 guests, celebrities and dignitaries packed the Westchester Ballroom. The master of ceremonies was Bill Daughtry, 1050 ESPN Radio sports broadcaster.

Other celebrities and sports figures who attended the affair included club alumni and actors JB Smoove, Leon Robinson and Shane Dean. Also in attendance were former NBA stars and club alumni Scooter McCray, Gus Williams and Lowes Moore, executive director of the Mount Vernon Boys and Girls Club.

Also in the crowd was club alumnus Walter Anderson, the retired chairman of Parade. Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino presented a proclamation, while Mount Vernon Mayor Ernest Davis did the same.

Actor Danny Glover assisted in presenting the awards when Oscar-winning actor and club alumnus Denzel Washington, the scheduled host, was unable to attend due to illness. Club President Danny Sawh thanked all those in attendance, and the Rev. Joseph McShane, president of Fordham University, gave the invocation.

Alcoa Foundation director Paula Davis, Kiwanis International Vice President and Fordham General Counsel Tom DeJulio, YES Network President John Filippelli and GAMCO Investors CEO Mario Gabelli were also among those in the ballroom supporting the cause.
