Celebrating “A Great Day in Harlem,” top Harlem designers presented their 2012 collections at Grant’s Tomb last Sunday for this year’s Harlem Week Fashion Fusion Show. As usual, the Harlem Fashion Initiative did a wonderful job coordinating this year’s design talent.

From clothes to accessories, Harlemites were astounded by the hottest looks on the runway. The show was hosted by actor Grizz Chapman, star of NBC’s “30 Rock,” and on-air personality Shaila from 107.5 WBLS-FM.

The show consisted of several vibrant segments. Each designer stood out and showed a fabulous fashion line. The best designers included Deborah Williams, Fabric Twins, Gadol Wilson, Edwina Greg, SofistaFunk, Roger Gary and others. The show also featured the new designer uniforms for National Park Service rangers.

One of the special highlights included the collection of Douglas Says, who paid homage to the Land of Liberty. His patriotism-inspired looks featured outfits for “The President’s Wife” that were so timely given the 2012 London Olympic Games. In his group were evening gowns, jumpsuits, cocktail dresses, pantsuits and swimwear that were all themed with the American spirit of style and grace.

Soon-to-be brides were starry-eyed while looking at Rodney Rogers’ blissful selection of traditional wedding gowns. Sofistafunk’s look was bold yet theatrical, with style influences from the Southern plantation era. There were also fashions that were inspired by Asian board rooms and French castles. The haunting creations alluded to times gone by yet not forgotten.

Other noticeable fashion attractions were Clarence Blair’s homage to the international stylized woman. His impressive collection focused on layered looks. There were a variety of rich, muted colors and exotic accessories that included peacock feathers.

Duane Fish presented a sharp, street-styled line including hoodies with bold geometric shapes and prints. For Harlem Heaven, designer Yvette Petty topped things off with a variety of dramatic crowns and headlining hats.

Come out and enjoy the many events that are taking place during Harlem Week 2012.
