Dance Theatre of Harlem to perform at Apollo Open House weekend

As part of the Apollo Theater's free Open House weekend, going on Feb. 3 through Feb. 5, the Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) is participating in the event with a performance on Saturday starting at 12pm
Along with several other dance acts, DTH is joining in the free event urging to the community to visit and explore the Apollo Theater. On Saturday the DTH Ensemble is performing two dance works including "Episode," choreographed by Peter Pucci, which tells the story about a relationship thorough dance. The dancers will also perform "Get in Line" that was choreographed by Darrel Grand Moultrie.
"This year we will celebrating our 43rd anniversary since our inception," said DTH director, Keith Saunders. "We are a part of culture in the Harlem community and have worked with and at the Apollo many times through educational services. We've also been guest artist with Aretha Franklin and others. Our participation in the open house is apart of our commitment to the Harlem community and New York City."
Saunders added that the free open house performance will reach out to members of the community in hopes they come see futures shows and support DTH.
Satruday's performances will be hosted by Apollo Theater historian Billy Mitchell, along with personalities from Fox 5 and the Amsterdam News. From 12pm to 2pm dancer and choreographer Mickey Davidson is leading family workshops in classic dances from the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s such as the Lindy-Hop, Boogie Back, Twist, Cool Jerk and Hand Jive.
DTH is gearing up for several upcoming performances including one at the Joyce Theater on Feb. 7 and another in honor of Black History Month called "The Diaspora Project" that will explore the African roots of dance and contemporary culture at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts. On Feb. 28 DTH is hosting its Second Annual Vision Gala honoring Harry Belefonte. DTH is also preparing for its upcoming Sunday matinee series which starts on Feb. 12.
