Democracy Prep school receives U.S. education grant

Democracy Prep Public Schools in Harlem received a slice of federal grant monies to expand and support its educational mission to educate students in low-income neighborhoods and communities of color. The charter network will receive more than $4.1 million for the first two years of a five-year grant to expand or open 15 schools, according to the Democracy Prep website.
In a press release, the U.S Education secretary said, "High-quality charter schools across the country are making tremendous differences in our children's lives, particularly children from low-income backgrounds. These grants will provide high-quality K-12 educational opportunities to students, preparing them for success in college and careers." The government gave more than $14.4 million to charter schools in more than 20 communities, according the website of the U.S. Department of Education. Democracy Prep Charter Schools opened its first school in 2006.
