The Public Theater begins previews for the world premiere of Colman Domingo's "Wild With Happy" on Tuesday, Oct. 9, in the Public's LuEsther Theater, 425 Lafayette St. The play runs through Nov. 11, with an official press opening on Tuesday, Oct. 23.
Directed by Robert O'Hara, the cast of "Wild With Happy" features Domingo (Gil), Korey Jackson (Terry), Maurice McRae (Mo) and Sharon Washington (Adelaide, Aunt Glo).
The Public's press description of the premise of the play states that "Wild With Happy" delves into "the surreal, bizarre and outrageous comedy that lies in dealing with death and healing." As the drama unfolds, theatergoers will get the opportunity to follow the journey of Gil, a young "actor who's struggling to carve out his own new life, and finds his worlds colliding when his mother dies and he decides to have her cremated." One big question for Gil is where to scatter her ashes, which he hopes will provide a fairytale ending for his mother in the one place that made her "wild with happy."
As playwright of this first show of the Public's season, Domingo explores these life-changing questions. At the same time, Domingo, the actor in the role of Gil, is sure to demonstrate the remarkable talent, which earned him nominations for a Tony Award for "The Scottsboro Boys" and an Obie Award for "Passing Strange."
Among Domingo's other credits as an actor are "Henry V" at the Public Theater and the Broadway productions of "Well" and "Chicago." His film and television credits include Spike Lee's "Red Hook Summer," "The Big Gay Sketch Show," "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" and "Nash Bridges."
