Harlem Week and the NYPD are hosting a gun buyback in an effort to get more weapons off the street.
The event is scheduled to take place Saturday, Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Mark's Harlem United Methodist Church located at 49-55 Edgecomb Ave.
People can turn in weapons including operable handguns and assault riffles in exchange for a $200 bank card, no questions asked. Those who turn in rifles and shotguns will get a $20 bank card.
Late last month the NYPD announced a $300,000 plan for 10 gun buyback programs across the five boroughs to bring down gun violence. Since 2008 the NYPD reports collecting more than 8,000 firearms.
