Victor Mooney of Flushing, Queens, is making his way back to Brooklyn some 5,000 miles later in his fourth attempt to bring awareness to HIV testing. Mooney is using a 24-foot custom-made Brazilian rowboat, christened “The Spirit of Malabo,” hoisted into a Maersk Line container at the Gateway Marina.
Having lost one brother to AIDS and with another battling HIV, Mooney will rejoin his boat later this month. The boat will be used to row from Las Palmas, Canary Islands, to New York. Mooney hopes his mission will encourage voluntary HIV testing.
