Tommy Hilfiger made a name for his brand 25 years ago, and during the early hip-hop days, he introduced street-style fashions for men. His colors were bold and bright. Clothes were loose-fitting and comfortable. He was a part of the revolution that helped to influence the way men actually thought about clothes. His stripes are bold, and yet, they function for modern men on the go this summer.
For this season, his stripes are striking. You’ll see men in more patterns and even floral designs. Ties are thin. Jackets are somewhat fitted. Color, and lots of it, is in for men. Hilfiger’s American apparel is worn by men and women around the world. His designs give time-honored classics a fresh look. The Bermuda short pantsuits and ensembles are so appropriate, especially in this hot weather. His discerning taste has provided the foundation for his global brand’s growth.
A self-taught designer, Hilfiger began designing for a small boutique. In the late ʼ70s, he moved to New York to pursue a position as a full-time designer. He caught the eye of Mohan Murjani, a successful business man who was looking to launch a line of men’s clothing, and his men’s fashion career was well on its way.
In 1985, he modernized button-down shirts, chino pants and other clothes with updated cuts, fit and details. He also hired legendary ad man George Lois, who developed a billboard that was placed in the center of New York City. It’s been a roller coaster fashion ride for this designer ever since. A designer for stars like Lenny Kravitz and Britney Spears allowed him to use such stars in his ads. The idea propelled Hilfiger in the right direction. He merged his designs with popular culture and extended his company to reach an online audience. He has worked with various foundations while supporting educational programs and Breast Health International “Fund For Living” programs.
This designer has always managed to keep his eyes and ears close to timely fashion. His looks have remained classic on the runways. For his 2013 summer collection, Hilfiger continues to be on point. Good show!
