U.S. Open ballperson tryouts set for Thursday, June 20

Approximately 80 sought-after positions as ballpersons for the 2013 U.S. Open are up for grabs, with approximately 500 people competing for spots. Prospective ballpersons will be evaluated by U.S. Open officials on their running, throwing and catching skills.

Positions are open to boys and girls 14 years of age and older for the coolest summer job in sports. Tryouts will be held Thursday, June 20 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing Park in Queens. General public open tryouts are at 3 p.m. The evaluation process will begin at approximately 4 p.m., after a welcome by U.S. Open Ballperson Director Tina Taps.

An additional media call will take place 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. A media call will be held earlier in the day, where members of the media can experience the process for themselves firsthand or capture footage of veteran U.S. Open ballpersons and staff demonstrating the evaluation process. Members of the media should RSVP for either the 4 p.m. general public tryouts or the 11:45 a.m. media call, also at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

U.S. Open ballpersons are paid an hourly wage. Ralph Lauren is the official outfitter of the U.S. Open ballpersons. The 2013 U.S. Open qualifying draw will be held Tuesday, Aug. 20, through Friday, Aug. 23. The 2013 U.S. Open main draw will be held Monday, Aug. 26, through Monday, Sept. 9.
