Greetings! It was a historic “Black is beautiful” night at the Tony Awards with the stunning, 88-year-young TV, film and theater icon Cicely Tyson winning her first Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play for “The Trip to Bountiful.” Courtney Vance received Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play for “Lucky Guy,” featuring Hollywood icon Tom Hanks. The delightful Patina Miller nabbed her Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for “Pippin,” which also won Best Musical Revival.
Billy Porter took Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for his performance as drag queen Lola in “Kinky Boots.” “Kinky Boots,” which had its score written by Cyndi Lauper, won a treasure trove of awards. Valisia LeKae, who channels Motown diva Diana Ross in “Motown: The Musical,” was nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, and Charl Brown was nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for his “re-creation” of Motown legend Smokey Robinson. Congrats also to the Black producers who are making their mark on what used to be the “Great White Way.” As the song says, “The neon lights are bright on Broadway.”
