Mayor Michael Bloomberg spent $12 million on commercials to influence U.S. senators to support gun control legislation that would require universal background checks. The ad campaign is part of the mayor's Mayors Against Illegal Guns organization. The mayor also met with Vice President Joe Biden over gun control legislation. On March 21, Bloomberg stood side-by-side in the Blue Room at City Hall with Biden and families involved in the Newtown shootings to push his agenda against gun violence. According to the mayor's office, more than 90 percent of Americans are in support of background checks for people purchasing guns.
