Celebrating Older American Month in Harlem

State Sen. Bill Perkins and the Visiting Nurse Service of New York celebrated "Older American Month" with an all-day event of fun and food for seniors in a huge tent on the plaza of the Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building. Perkins was the host and Assemblyman Keith L.T. Wright greeted the seniors during the celebration.
Maxine McCrey Montano, coordinated the artists.Healthy food was provided by Sylvia's, Red Rooster, Melba's, Gran Piatto d'Oro, Chocolat Restaurant, Spoonbread and other restaurants.
Florence Rice, a 94-year-old consumer advocate, was the guest speaker. Poet Abiodun Oyewole of the Last Poets performed an original poem for the occasion. Swing dancers June Terry, Ice, Elizabeth Gantt and Czerney Shury, performed and other seniors joined in. Peggy Ruffin of Soul Line Dance Party got audience members to participate in the soul line dance. And the only non-senior, poet/singer Sophia Loren Coffee, performed spoken words and a song. Visiting Nurse Service of New York conducted blood pressure and BMI screenings, and free manicures were provided by the Capital District Educational Opportunity Center for the seniors. Each senior received a gift bag from the Visiting Nurse Service of New York.
