Former Newark City Council President Luis Quintana was sworn in as the first Hispanic mayor of the Brick City at a ceremony Tuesday afternoon. The ceremonial oath of office was administered by state Sen. Richard Codey.

Quintana, 53, is a native of Puerto Rico and has been a member of the often divisive Newark City Council since 1994. He replaces former Mayor Cory Booker, who was elected to the U.S. Senate in October. Quintana said he has no plans to seek the job permanently next year.

At least four candidates have announced plans to run for mayor in May, with the most notable contenders being North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos Jr. and former Assistant Attorney General Shavar Jeffries.
