NABJ Conference brings out the best

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) hosted its Region I Conference and Media Institute for Media Professionals and Entrepreneurs last weekend in the city. Media professionals from the Northeast attended the event, which included workshops and seminars.
The two-day program was held at Associated Press headquarters and featured programing for public relations professionals on Friday and journalists on Saturday. NABJ teamed up with the Asbury Park Press, NBC News, the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation and Neighbor to Family Inc. as sponsors of the event. The theme for the conference was “Topics, Training, Transition: Keeping Journalists Informed, Educated and Prepared for the Changing Journalism World,” while the public relations portion was themed “The Power of Partnerships: Taking You Career to the NEXT Level.”
“The regional conferences and media institutes fulfill the wishes of members who want to take advantage of training but can’t always attend the convention,” said NABJ President Bob Butler.
On Friday, sessions discussed partnerships, social media tips, the new health insurance marketplace and a discussion with public relations mavens. PR mogul Terrie Williams served as the keynote speaker and discussed the tools needed to be a successful publicist.
On Saturday, journalists were treated to sessions about television production, being an expert, covering business news and working up the media management ladder. Guest speakers included Mark Thompson, Benet Wilson, Patrick Riley and Essence Magazine news editor Wendy Williams.
“We’re giving journalists in the area and beyond another chance to refresh their skills and gain additional training to be better prepared for the ever-changing journalism world,” said Sherlon Christie, NABJ’s Region I director.
NABJ is hosting its 39th annual Convention and Job Fair in Boston next summer.
