The Ailey family is mourning the passing of one of the giants of the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, Calvin Hunt, remembered by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and the Ailey Board of Trustees as “our beloved senior director of performance and production.”
The Dance Foundation notes: “In 1982, at the invitation of Alvin Ailey, [Hunt] joined the production staff, and over the next three decades, he became a pivotal leader within the organization, working closely with Artistic Directors Judith Jamison and Robert Battle. Calvin played an integral role managing Ailey’s tours around the world, extending Ailey’s role as a cultural ambassador.
“Calvin had an unparalleled love for Ailey and a passion for life. His sense of humor, wise counsel and warm friendship will be deeply missed. He was an extraordinary man whose passing is a great loss to the Ailey family and the world of dance.”
Said Jamison, artistic director emerita, “The Ailey family has lost a great champion, and I will miss him dearly. We are saddened, but his death has brought new light to our path as we move forward. We remember him in the fullness of his life. We see his afterglow. What a wonderful legacy.”
In a joint statement, Chairman Joan H. Weill, Artistic Director Robert Battle, Associate Artistic Director Masazumi Chaya and Executive Director Bennett Rink said, “Our hearts go out to his loving wife, Margaret, their two children, Eli and Brenna, and his entire family.”
A memorial celebration will be announced later in the spring.
