David Goodson. The Roots.

I guess their career would be akin to that of a short giant. You’d be quick to notice the difference in size but lose sight of the fact that they’re amongst that rare breed. That’s what happens when you’re coming from a place of authenticity. Creativity over commerce, critical acclaims over fame; let’s show and prove with our art. When that occurs you can boast a resume of an excess of 10 studio albums, collaborative albums with Jay Z, Betty Wright, John Legend and Elvis Costello, a Grammy award, and collaborative projects with Dave Chappelle, Jaguar Wright, Jill Scott, D’Angelo and a slew of others. Giants!! Better yet, with two decades strong as a collective, their career is on an upswing. Check it, they served as the house band on NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon from 2009 to 2014, as the host gained visibility and a prestigious upgrade to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon they serve in the same capacity in addition to supplying musical accompaniment to show guest artists since 2014. Giants!! To my memory however, I can’t recall if they ever graced the Summer Jam stage. In fact, for the past six years they might have held their own music festival hailing the same day as the premiere hip-hop music live event called The Roots Picnic. This year with number 7, the Roots again compiled an all-star lineup for the Seventh Annual Roots Picnic on Sat, May 31, 2014 01:00 at the Festival Pier (at Penn’s Landing), Philadelphia, Pa. The lineup features, Snoop Dogg, Janelle Monae, Bad Rabbits, Just Blaze and Biz Markie amongst others. What differs in 2014 is that on June 1, the day after, The Roots are a featured act on the main stage at Summer Jam. As the unofficial jumpstart of the summer! Two stages, 55,000 screaming fans and hip-hop’s biggest names will gather for the hip-hop event of the year. WQHT HOT 97, New York’s No. 1 station for hip-hop and R&B, announced last Tuesday the lineup for HOT 97 Summer Jam 2014. Superstars 50 Cent and Nicki Minaj featuring Young Money & Lil Wayne, make grand returns after much ballyhooed misunderstandings with the station. Also performances by Nas, Wiz Khalifa, Trey Songz, DJ Mustard featuring YG & Ty Dolla $ign, Kid Ink, Sevyn Streeter, Bunji Garlin, Action Bronson, and Troy Ave, plus the requisite surprise guests in music. Early arrivers will check for the HOT 97’s Festival Stage, located outside of MetLife Stadium, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., to see performances by Childish Gambino, Jhene Aiko, Mack Wilds, August Alsina, Iggy Azalea, Chinx, and Nipsey Hussle.
