New York state Sen. Adriano Espaillat is back on the campaign trail for re-election and has gathered significant endorsements along the way.
Last week, the United Federation of Teachers endorsed Espaillat, citing his record as an education advocate and his successful push for universal pre-kindergarten funding. In a statement, UFT President Michael Mulgrew described Espaillat as a staunch supporter of the working class through his actions in Albany.
“Adriano Espaillat has been a dedicated advocate for New York City kids and schools, and we are proud to support his re-election,” said Mulgrew. “Adriano was a passionate voice in the fight for universal pre-kindergarten funding this year and worked hard to secure the $300 million investment in our children’s future. He is dedicated to closing the achievement gap in low-income neighborhoods and is helping ensure all students have the opportunities they deserve to succeed.”
The state senator described the importance of programs such as universal pre-K in a statement. “Universal pre-kindergarten has incredible potential to close the achievement gap that has left low-income families and communities of color behind,” said Espaillat. “I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish this year and thankful to have earned the support of the UFT in this campaign. We must continue to work together to secure the education funding New York City kids need.”
Espaillat has been endorsed by other unions, including the 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, SEIU 32BJ and Teamsters 237. He has also been endorsed by the Working Families Party.
New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli endorsed Espaillat for re-election, citing his record on workers’ rights, affordable housing and immigration reform.
“In the New York Senate, Adriano Espaillat has been a tireless advocate for affordable housing and immigrant rights, while fighting to strengthen the rights of workers throughout his district,” said DiNapoli, in a statement. “I’m proud to endorse him and hope the voters of the 31st Senate District will join me in supporting him on September 9.”
Espaillat has now been endorsed by elected officials such as Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York City Public Advocate Letitia James, Senate Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and New York City Council Members Mark Levine and Ydanis Rodriguez.
