Calling emerging U.S. fashion designers, Brad Smith has announced Design for Brad Smith, a one-of-a-kind design competition. Submissions open on Jan. 2 at www.designforbradsmith.com.
This life-changing competition offers designers an opportunity to submit a complete red carpet look as a hand-drawn or digitally created sketch. Winning looks will be hand-selected by Smith and a panel of fashion industry professionals led by Fashion TV CEO Rita Kahn.
An experienced fashion production team will produce the actual look. Smith will showcase the winning look on the red carpet before and after a Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week event in February 2014.
In addition to a cash prize, the winning designer will receive an all-expense-paid trip to New York City to accompany Smith on the red carpet, attend a fashion show and have the opportunity to meet with members of the media and network with fashion notables. The winner will also attend an exclusive cocktail reception hosted by Smith at the Strand Hotel NYC.
“I’d tell the participants to keep it simple. I like clean, classic lines with a bit of an edge. Someone took a chance with me, and I always want to pay it forward,” said Smith about launching the competition.
A football player, Smith was drafted as a wide receiver and quarterback for the New York Jets. During his rookie years, he was awarded the Jets’ Kyle Clifton “Good Guy” Award. In December 2009, he returned a kickoff for a 106-yard touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts. To date, Smith is the only NFL player in history to score a touchdown on kickoff returns (three times), reception (twice) and rush (twice). Smith enjoys empowering inner-city youth through his foundation and is now making a place for himself in fashion.
