Some fashion secrets are out. For fall/winter ’14, John Paul Ataker unveils his evening collection in New York. An international couture designer, Ataker expands his label to the U.S. It’s a first for this womenswear label that’s known for custom fabrics and textures.

Founded in the 1970s, this family-owned company is known around the world for exquisite evening gowns that are enhanced with flowing lines and classic tailoring. “New Yorkers are idealists who demand the best of themselves and others,” said Ataker. “That’s what lures them to the city, and that’s why we wanted to launch the new collection here.”

In his line of fall/winter gowns, Ataker works beyond the intricate beading and ruffles of previous collections. He allows his custom fabrics to take center sage. His clothes follow the line of a woman’s body. Whether the gown is a strapless ivory silk dress whose long, banded skirt subtly suggests the Jazz Age or a jet-black creation with a long-sleeved black lace bodice, his theme manifests itself. His gowns would have been at home in Edith Wharton’s New York.

Many of his new evening gowns are already on display at designers’ showrooms and headquarters on Seventh Avenue.

“The designs are tested on fabrics until we find the ideal combination that brings the design to life,” declared Ataker, who has built a reputation on such sartorial alchemy.

For inspiration while designing the collection, Ataker envisioned the quintessential New Yorker, a woman who’s both powerful and feminine. The woman he designs for has discerning taste that’s reflected in her wardrobe. His emphasis on high-quality fabrics and elegant contours are quite noticeable in his work.

After the company was founded in 1977 in Istanbul, Ataker’s sophisticated style and high-quality tailoring catapulted the firm to a leading position in the fashion industry. Now headquartered in New York, the design house maintains its commitment to ensuring every woman who wears the brand feels both the elegance of the designs and the soft caress of its luxurious fabrics.
