Victor Mooney has arrived in the Canary Islands and is preparing for a 5,000 mile journey back to Brooklyn by rowboat.
Mooney, who has already attempted to row across the Atlantic Ocean three times before, is in the town of Maspalomas, Gran Canaria planning to row his way back to the U.S. His 24 foot rowboat, the Spirit of Malabo, arrived on the island of Gran Canaria in late December 2013.
Mooney is completing the journey in hopes of encouraging people to volunteer for HIV testing, according to a press release on Mooney’s website. He told the Brooklyn Daily in late December that he wanted to raise money and awareness for HIV, as he has one brother living with the illness and one who died from AIDS.
Press for Mooney said they could not offer a date yet as to when he would depart on his journey.
