The family of the recently deceased Ruby Dee announced Tuesday that she will be honored with a public memorial celebration on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Riverside Church in New York City at 11 a.m. The service will feature tributes and reflections from family, friends and colleagues who were influenced by her outstanding life and work.
Making her transition on June 11 at the age of 91, Dee was a lifelong advocate for initiatives supporting the arts and education. In her memory, the family suggests that donations be made to the Ruby Dee Memorial Fund at Hunter College, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority or your local community theater.
Along with her late husband, the late actor Ossie Davis, she was also a civil rights activist. With an acting career spanning several decades, Dee is best remembered for her roles in “A Raisin in the Sun” and “American Gangster,” which earned her an Oscar nomination.
