The Wayside Future Leaders Scholarship Program held its third annual scholarship dinner and awards ceremony on Saturday, June 28 at the Wayside Manor. This year’s theme was “Prepared for a Purpose.”

Dr. Rudy Crew, president of Medgar Evers College and former chancellor of New York City public schools, was the keynote speaker. His charge was powerful and encouraging. First, he said, never allow others to define your identity. Second, remember our purpose in life is to serve others, not ourselves. Always reach behind you and pull someone up with you. Finally, maintain dignity and honor in all work.

Musical entertainment was provided by the Jimmy Hill Band and Great Women of Gospel (Gloria Woods, Nadine P. Simmons, Lena Soul and the Rev. Maxine Cassellas). Additional performers included Williams and Williams Gospel and the Regime Steppers.

The graduates were Ashley Anderson, Ka-Anna Williams, Shakia Bennett, Jordan Williams, Jaylan Williams, Terron Wood, Keshawn Robinson and Elijah Thomas.

The scholarship program is a youth initiative of the Wayside Baptist Church, where the Rev. M. Zidde Hamatheite is the pastor and Lottie Shannon is the scholarship’s program director.
