“[Bratton’s ‘broken windows’ policy] is stupid and racist; it does not make sense,” Charles Barron said. “Tell Bratton to take his training and shove it! They need to pay and be punished!”
“It could have been Mayor de Blasio’s wife,” stated Councilwoman Barron. “He should think about that” when deciding how to resolve this issue.
Both Barrons are convinced that the “system is broken,” accusing city judges of allowing police officers to “walk free” without penalty. Charles Barron illustrated the existence of two criminal justice systems, mentioning that Michael Vick received a three-year prison sentence for killing dogs, but officers only have vacation time taken away for assaulting Black men and women. He said the legal apparatus “believes dogs are worth more than Black lives.”
Midway through the session, Councilwoman Barron led members of the community in chants of “Bratton must go!”
There were no complaints against the Millers before the police showed up in front of their home to harass them, said Councilwoman Barron. She added, “Police officers decided to interrupt their barbecue without provocation and wound up assaulting both parents in front of their young daughter.”
The police have charged Moses Miller with obstruction of governmental administration and Rosan Miller with disorderly conduct. The charge of resisting arrest has been dropped.
De Blasio said, “I have not seen the pictures ... and I want to be careful until we have all the facts to comment. We’ve made clear,―both the commissioner and I,―what our view is on the use of chokeholds. And it’s not acceptable under any normal circumstances, but I don’t want to rush to judgment.”
“This was all over a grill,” Charles Barron said. “This is about grilling in front of her house.” He notes that the woman’s child can be seen in the video, watching her mother being choked. He also claims that at one point, the arresting officer called the husband “nigger.”
Coming on the heels of the death of Eric Garner on Staten Island a week ago, this incident has Bratton worried that tensions between the Black community and the NYPD may escalate further.
“I don’t care what anyone says,” Charles Barron declared. “There is a powder keg in this town. Don’t blame me, the social forecaster, when there is an explosion. Just like you don’t blame the weatherman when the storm comes.”
