African women celebrate at the UN

The Sirleaf Market Women’s Fund (SMWF) was founded by a group of concerned women from around the world for the women traders of Liberia, who sustained their families and communities throughout 14 years of civil war. Supporters gathered at the United Nations to celebrate the completion of market buildings in major cities in Liberia.

On the program were (L to R) H.E. Julia Duncan-Cassell, minister of gender and development, Republic of Liberia; H.E. Clara Makungwa, minister of gender, children and community development, Republic of Malawi; and market women Kelefasi Mlenji, Republic of Malawi, and Kebbeh Zayzay Monger, president of Montserrado Rural Women, Republic of Liberia. They joined Dr. Thelma Awori, the mistress of ceremonies and chair of the international board of trustees of the SMWF.
