The Rev. Marilyn Ava Jolley ordained into the gospel ministry
The Rev. Christine Caton | 11/13/2014, 2:58 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 2, there was a great celebration at First Baptist Church of Crown Heights as Minister Marilyn Ava Jolley was ordained into the gospel ministry by the Rev. Dr. Clarence Norman Sr. In attendance were family, co-workers and many clergy from New York. The rousing service of ordination included songs “Order My Steps” and “Total Praise,” rendered by the First Baptist Church Combined Choirs.
There was a musical tribute to Jolley from the Djembe Ministry, which she leads. A sermon was delivered from the book of Habakkuk 3:13 by the Rev. Dan J. Craig, pastor of Mt. Sion Baptist Church in Brooklyn, who mentored Jolley through the process of ordination. The sermon offered words of encouragement to Jolley as she entered this new phrase of her ministry.
After the report of the Ordination Council was presented to the church, the ordination vows were administered by Associate Pastor the Rev. Daryl Bloodsaw. An ordination prayer was led by the Rev. Karl Delk, as all ordained clergy in attendance laid hands on Jolley.
Jolley was presented with the tools of the trade, a Bible, hymnal and communion set, and she was robed by her sister and niece with the assistance of her son. She was also presented another robe from her former pastor. A special presentation was made by New York Theological Seminary, her alma mater.
Jolley was given the Right Hand of Fellowship by all ordained clergy in attendance, and she was presented to the church. A reception was held after the service.
Jolley is the fourth woman ordained at First Baptist Church of Crown Heights. She will continue working as an associate minister of the church, centering on her Djembe ministry and visitation of the sick and shut in.
