What some folks have said is, “America’s infatuation with killing young Black men continues.” An independent autopsy’s outcome, released last weekend, established that the two Caucasian cops who killed 22-years-young Darrien Nathaniel Hunt in Saratoga Springs, Utah, Sept. 10 had shot him six times from behind. It shows him being hit in his elbow, hand and legs, with the fatal shot striking the center of his back.
“The autopsy results found that none of these shots were from Darrien’s front,” revealed family attorney Randall Edwards. “This is consistent with statements made by witnesses on the scene, who report that Darrien was shot while running away from the police. It would appear difficult, if not impossible, to reconcile these facts with the story released by the Utah County attorney’s office that Darrien was lunging toward the officers when he was shot. We continue to hope that a full investigation will reveal the whole truth about this tragedy.”
Tim Taylor, chief deputy attorney in Utah County, described what he alleges happened after cops responded to reports of a suspicious man walking with a “samurai-type sword.” “When the officers made contact with Mr. Hunt, he brandished the sword and lunged toward the officers with the sword, at which time Mr. Hunt was shot.”
Hunt’s supporters refute those claims. “There are only three people on Earth—two people on Earth now—who know what went down between those officers and Darrien … and one of them is dead,” stated Edwards. He said Hunt’s sword had a blunt edge and was mostly decorative, like something “you might win at a carnival for knocking over stuffed animals.”
“You have this young Black man with a pretty big Afro walking down the street carrying what looks like some sort of weapon. It’s a pretty sleepy community. What happened next? And that is where things get very interesting,” said Edwards.
Just moments before Hunt’s killing, a woman at a nearby gas station photographed the young man, with his towering Afro, speaking with the cops as they appear relaxed and at ease, not in any defensive position, but it’s unclear if Hunt’s hands were occupied.
“She says that within seconds, she looked down to finish pumping her gas and he was on the run and they are shooting at him,” Edwards stated. Adding that from where she snapped the photo to the Panda Express, where Hunt’s body collapsed, is about 100 to 150 yards apart.
“I’m in Saratoga Springs, because it’s a safe little community, and they killed him … they killed my son because he’s Black,” asserted Susan Hunt, who is Caucasian. “No white boy with a little sword would they shoot while he’s running away.”
The killer cops, Matt Schauerhamer and Nicholas Judson, are on paid leave pending the investigation’s outcome.
Darrien Hunt’s death occurred approximately one month after cops killed unarmed Black teen Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo.
“The reason we had the autopsy done is for the family to get answers about what happened and why,” Edwards said. “All I can say is that it seems unlikely that you brandish a sword, you jump toward the officers, lunging toward them, and end up shot in the back.”
Supporters are calling for a civil rights investigation.
“I’ve been begging the police, why from the time I saw the pictures of you just standing by him with his hands to his side … does he end up seconds later with a bullet in him?” questioned Susan Hunt. “And then if he’s running away, why you had to put in more bullets, and I don’t even know how many. That’s what I want to know.”
