Harlem Week began 41 years ago as Harlem Day, and Sunday, Aug. 16 marked the 41st Harlem Day, taking place on 135th Street from St. Nicholas Avenue to Fifth Avenue, with four stages of entertainment; day two of the Children’s Festival; the Upper Manhattan Auto Show, featuring more than 100 classic, antique and new automobiles, motorcycles and other vehicles; the NYC Health Village, which provided free health tests and screenings; and a wide array of vendors and exhibitors selling a wide variety of items, including food, artwork and jewelry. Some of the featured performers included R&B artists Vivian Green, Kenny Lattimore and Angela Johnson, New Jersey Performing Arts Center Jazz for Teens, Blake Carrington and the Salvation Army Phil Ramone Orchestra for Kids. The day also featured a back-to-school fashion show and a salute to Malcolm X in celebration of what would have been his 90th birthday, as well as special tributes to musical legends Ornette Coleman and Little Jimmy Scott.
