Marie Slaughter (177409)

Marie Slaughter of Queens was recently honored at the Community Bridge House on her 50th birthday and for her 35 years of volunteer service.

State Sen. Leroy Comrie honored her at a ceremony and presented her with a proclamation. The event was attended by her family, friends and co-workers.

A correction officer with 27 years in service, she has taken on the added responsibility, upon being elected, as the first female from her facility, of a COBA union delegate and has served for the past 18 years.

Slaughter works as a Sunday school teacher at the Holiness Church of Jesus Christ. Since age 15, she’s fed those in need for Thanksgiving and volunteers at the Battered Women’s Shelter and the Jamaica Homeless Shelter, giving out gloves, hats, clothes, books and food.

Some of her other community service projects include working with the Cross Island YMCA and at her daughter’s school, PS/IS 208Q, with the Girl’s Empowerment/Enrichment Program for Women’s History Month and with the PTA.

She organizes an annual walk-a-thon at the Cross Island YMCA to raise money to provide a safe place for the children during the summer months and she organizes a toy drive each year for the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. In 2010, she was a YMCA Volunteer of the Year Awardee.

During the holiday season for the past 25 years, Slaughter has rallied her co-workers from the New York City Department of Corrections for a prison toy drive, providing toys for children.
