The Juneteenth Committee of Masjid Malcolm Shabazz and the Martin Luther King Jr. Center New York Support Group hosted the 22nd annual Juneteenth KingFest Celebration Parade and Street Fair Saturday in Harlem.
The street fair was held on 116th Street between Malcolm X Boulevard and Fifth Avenue. The parade made its way down Frederick Douglass Boulevard before going on 125th Street then going up Malcolm X Boulevard.
The Juneteenth holiday is Friday, June 19 and commemorates the official end of slavery in the United States. The holiday dates back to 1865, when slaves in Texas first received word that they were free, two and half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863. There are several theories as to why the slaves in Texas got the news so late.
