Numbers from the Irvington Police Department indicate that crime is coming down in the New Jersey township.

Nearly 55 violent offenses were recorded by police from Jan. 1 to April 31 compared with 66 during the same time last year. Reports indicate that nonviolent offenses were about the same number compared with last year.

City officials have said they hope the numbers keep coming down, because crime in the area typically sees a spike during the summer.

Irvington Mayor Tony Vauss unveiled his summer crime plan last week. The plan includes several police units deployed to respond to crime in problem areas.
