Are older women coloring their hair more? In the hair industry, “granny trend” and “co-washing” are the new buzzwords.

This is really not news. Older women have been coloring their hair for years. These days, it is difficult to tell who has gray hair. For some, coloring their hair allows them to look younger longer. For others, it is a matter of acceptance of their age and having a choice of whether or not to look their age. If your facial structure can support your hair color, wear it! Just like younger women who dye and wear their hair brown, highlighted, red, blonde or any other color, you can keep it up.

According to results from a recent panel of independent salons held by Kline Pro, a product-level database published quarterly, older women of all ages are coloring their hair shades of silver and gray. The panel found that within the bright- and silver-shade groups, hair colorant sales were up in 2014.

“It’s exciting to see current market trends reflected in our data,” remarked Paula Gottiner, Kline’s manager of the program. “We’ve been busy building our panel and are currently reporting on about 1,000 independent salons and 8,500 chain salons. We are planning to double the number of independent salons by the end of 2015.”

Another trend that’s been validated by this revolutionary data is co-washing, the practice of cleansing one’s hair with conditioner instead of shampoo. This clarifying segment posted the highest growth of all conditioner types in independent salons. Quidad’s Curl Co-Wash is among the leading items in the segment.
