I was honored again to judge the annual Bake-Off at the Harlem Park To Park Harlem Harvest Festival held last month on St. Nicholas Avenue between 116th and 117th streets. With fellow judges Joann Baylor (Make My Cake), Arlyn Blake (food consultant) and Gloria Wright (St. Nicholas Tenant Association), we soldiered through four categories of baked goods and more than 20 entries. Here are our winners and the People’s Choice Award winners!
First Place: Angel Lopez of The Doe Fund for inventive carrot cake whoopie pies
Runners-up: Eileen Barett of Aromas Bakery (a 2016 “I’m So AmNewFOOD” contest Harlem EatUp! winner) for her Pumpkin Double Dare Cake and Jasmin Bulger of Sweet Suga Mama’s for rum cake balls (PCA)
First Place: Felabi Phillips of Harlem Munchies for her apple blueberry pie (PCA) with all that extra crust and crumble that I loved!
Runners-up: Laronda Bynum of Cookie Shop Lady for sweet potato coconut pie and Sarah Merchlewitz for her Cheddar Cheddar Bang Bang apple pie
