A Forthright brunch

It was a Saturday morning. You can take the women out of the city, but you can’t take the brunch out of the women. Now where to find it? Again, Jessica (aka “Julie”) took the helm and steered our brood in the direction of simple brunch nirvana. The journey would not be easy in 100-degree weather, but it would be the perfect fortifier for a day of shopping.
Our destination, Forthright (@ForthrightCafe, 98 San Jacinto Blvd., 512-433-6155, www.forthright.cafe), is a clean, modern space within an office building. The simple, small menu was filled with seemingly familiar dishes, such as toast and waffles, but then the southern Tex-mex hits like “POW!” with fried chicken, pork belly and chilies.
Of course I couldn’t decide what I wanted to eat, so my girl Raquel came in with the share. We would attack chicken Benedict and avocado toast with a killer bloody mary and latte on the side. Others had the waffle breakfast sammy and eggs Benedict with pork belly.
The avocado toast was composed of thick-cut bread, lemony avocado, pepitas and poached eggs. Chicken Benedict was tender buttermilk-brined fried chicken breast and poached eggs on a housemade English muffin with tangy light hollandaise and pickled chilies. So bomb!
I’ve asked the forthright people at Forthright to open an NYC locale. They are deliberating … stay posted.
