Essentially, they are following the playbook of the anti-tax extremist Grover Norquist who declared, “I don’t want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub.”

Even before the bill has been reconciled, GOP leaders are pointing to the deficit they have just ballooned. To address this growing gap, their plan is to slash entitlements, including Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, programs the 45th president promised would not be cut during his tenure. But we know too well the value of the president’s words.

Polls indicate that the vast majority of the American people oppose the tax bills. Groups such as Indivisible, and Not One Penny, as well as sisters and brothers in labor and the progressive community, must keep up the pressure and make sure we hold every elected official accountable. The scores of demonstrations, rallies and sit-ins and the thousands of calls we made during the tax debate must continue.

Our election victories last month in Virginia and New Jersey and in local elections around the country tell us that the mood is shifting and the tide is turning. Remember, we are many and they are few.
