High school, college and graduate students can get an up-close look at a career in the public sector this summer. New York City’s Department of Design and Construction is offering six-week and 10-week internships this summer.
For the high school internship, the DDC will pick 30 students from public and private high schools across the city to explore careers in engineering, construction, design, law, business administration, finance and architecture from the public sector perspective for six weeks.
The college and graduate internship lasts 10 weeks. It’s paid and gives students the chance to develop a mentoring relationship with senior-level staff and get a hands-on technical experience.
“Our summer internship programs are structured to expose students to the challenges of upgrading and constructing the city’s public building and infrastructure,” said DDC Commissioner Feniosky Peña-Mora in a statement. “Since 2014, over 85 students have built mentoring relationships with our staff, and we are exciting to attracting more professionals to these fields this summer.”
Some of the assignments for the high school internship could include computer aided design drafting for those interested in architecture or engineering, internet research, word processing and spreadsheets.
Students in the college and graduate internships will work in either the infrastructure division, the program management division or the public buildings division of the DDC. This internship includes meetings and seminars with DDC senior staff and high school interns; project assignments for the term of the program, with the chance to rotate projects, depending on availability; field trips; and a Community Day working on service projects.
“Our prior interns have left a greatly positive impression on DDC staff,” stated Lee Llambelis, DDC deputy commissioner for Community Partnerships and STEAM Initiatives. “Mentors witnessed their interns expand their knowledge of the design and construction fields, and develop important business skills such as networking and public speaking. It is an opportunity for young people to explore the world of the built environment.”
The DDC’s accepting applications for the high school internship program up to March 31, 2017. Applicants must live in New York City, be at least 16 years old and have proper working papers. The internship runs from July 5, 2017, through Aug. 11, 2017.
Applications for the college and graduate summer internship program have be filed by March 17, 2017. Undergraduate students have to be matriculated in an accredited college or must be a recent college graduate (either the winter or spring term of the program year). Graduate students have to currently be in a graduate program in an accredited college, university or law school. This internship runs from June 5, 2017, through Aug. 11, 2017.
