‘Jewish Treasures of the Caribbean’
3/23/2017, 1:15 p.m.
Eight years ago while on assignment in Curaçao, photographer Wyatt Gallery stumbled upon the oldest Jewish synagogue in the Western Hemisphere, dating back to 1732. He took some photographs of it and from 2009 to 2015, he would go on to locate and document other historic synagogues and Jewish cemeteries in Curaçao, as well as in Barbados, Jamaica, Nevis, St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. Eustatius and Suriname.
Gallery’s exhaustive survey of these remarkable sacred sites is published for the first time in “Jewish Treasures of the Caribbean” (Schiffer, 2017). The book presents more than 200 exquisite color images along with comprehensive texts that together tell the fascinating and little-known history of the earliest Jewish communities to settle in the Americas.
This spring and summer Gallery will talk about his new book at the National Arts Club (April 9), Rizzoli Bookstore (April 11), 92nd Street Y (June 29) and Shearith Israel (May 3).
