Nine community members from Inwood and East Harlem were arrested after blocking the intersection of Dyckman Street and Broadway for 15 minutes while a crowd of 200 Inwood and Washington Heights residents gathered.

The civil disobedience was the culmination of a march that began at the Dyckman Street No. 1 Train station and ended at Riverside-Inwood Neighborhood Garden where they prepared to spend the night in protest of the City’s Inwood NYC rezoning plan. Eight of the protesters were released within three hours of the arrest and one was kept overnight.

After staging a 24-hour occupation of the office of Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez last week, residents continued to escalate the pressure on Rodriguez and all New York City Councilmembers to vote “NO” on the proposed Inwood NYC Rezoning.
