The buzzworthy beauty of Bermuda

You can also get your golf on in Bermuda. Lovely greens are plentiful. Bermuda is home to the infamous Port Royal Golf Course, which was the home of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf from 2009-2014. But for sure, Bermuda is about the ocean. Whether you want to wile away your day chilling and soaking up the sun at beautiful beaches like the beloved Elbow Beach, or dive, snorkel, Jet Ski, boat, paddle board, the choice is yours.
Come evening you board the Callista for a cruise around the Harrington Sound, and if you’re in the mood for a party, Gosling’s Rum Tasting Tour will get it started. Cruise the Great Sound and Gosling’s “Rumologist” (who knew there was such a thing) serves up a tasting of three award-winning rums and rum cake made with Gosling’s Black Seal Rum. Let’s just say the evening starts quietly with talk of Bermuda’s history and traditions, and as the rum starts flowing, conversations increase, the laughter comes, the music cranks up and some will dance, even if by themselves, all this and a spectacular sunset too.
Much as all the fun makes for great memories, one thing you’ll never forget is the food—local specialties such as fish chowder, fish cake or a fish sandwich. Don’t go home without eating at Blu, named one of “100 Best Restaurants in the World” by Conde Nast Traveler magazine. The atmosphere is romantic with sweeping views of the Great Sound, and the food fantastic. Go for fusion appetizers like grilled oysters with bacon strips, warm butter, scallions; asparagus tempura; and entrees like beef rib ravioli (homemade pasta) or the almond crusted salmon. Wash it down with wine from an extensive list or creative cocktails, and of course a Rum Swizzle, the unofficial national drink.
As for where to stay, you have a variety of options. But the Newstead Belmont Hills Golf Resort & Spa is hard to top. Luxurious, elegant, spacious, modern studios to three-bedroom suites, private terraces with views of Hamilton Harbor and the infinity pool. Pamper yourself at the full-service spa and dine at Beau Rivage, whether you’re filling up on the outrageous Sunday brunch, where there’s an abundant buffet or at dinner where you feast on the flavors of France with island ingredients. Top chef Jean-Claude Garzia runs the culinary show.
You won’t be able to put your finger on it, but for sure there’s something about Bermuda that captures your heart. The only thing to do is go back again and try to figure it out.
