Miami schools superintendent turns down offer to head NYC public schools

New York City has concluded its search for a new Education Department chancellor.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools superintendent Alberto Carvalho said Thursday he is breaking an agreement with NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio to be the city’s next schools chancellor, prompting the mayor’s press secretary to declare it a “bullet dodged.”

The announcement was made at a Miami school board meeting the day after de Blasio tweeted that Carvalho had accepted the job, replacing Carmen Farina, who is retiring.
