The Jazz Journalist Association will be hosting the Jazz Media Summit in New York City in the midst of NY Winter Jazzfest and Jazz Congress. This year the collection of panels will take place at the Jazz Gallery in Manhattan Jan. 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free to the public and will highlight panels that will engage topics of gender, Black Lives Matter, social justice and taking more initiative as writers and broadcasters to truly reach audiences.

Michelle Mercer, a jazz journalist for NPR and DownBeat, author of “Will You Take Me As I Am: Joni Mitchell’s Blue Period” and “Footprints: The Life and Work of Wayne Shorter,” will be moderating the “Gender Issues in Jazz Journalism” panel, which will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Don Palmer, Jazz Journalist Association board member, former director of Individual Artists Program and program officer of Museum and Presenting Programs at New York State Council on the Arts, will be hosting “Black Lives Matter and Other Social Justice Issues in Jazz Journalism” from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Howard Mandel, JJA president, from DownBeat, ArtsJournal.com/Jazz Beyond Jazz and author of “Miles Ornette Cecil: Jazz Beyond Jazz” and “Future Jazz,” will lead the panel titled “Beyond the Immediate: Writers, Photographer, Broadcasters on Extending Outreach to Audience” from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

This event is free to the public. If you’re truly interested in journalism and the portrayal of jazz and jazz artists in the media, in academia and in books, this event will be a great one to attend. There will be insightful perspective from influential thought leaders and media professionals in the jazz community. This vent will also be an opportunity to face the disparity of women and women of color in jazz media. Bring questions and an open mind to this afternoon of thoughtful conversation and insight.
