National Action Network hosts annual King Day Public Policy Forum
Rev. Al Sharpton hosted the annual King Day Public Policy Forum at the National Action Network (NAN) headquarters in Harlem. Several politicians spoke at the event including Mayor Bill de Blasio. Sharpton also atteded the Martin Luther King Day Breakfast in Washington D.C. and a King Day event at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Newark.
New York Urban League Young Professionals and King holiday with day of service
Members of the New York Urban League Young Professionals (NYULYP) by volunteering. Members are at Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan and New Design High School doing various projects targeted towards youth, seniors and the less fortunate.
Local Morehouse College alumni come together to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The Morehouse College Manhattan Alumni Association held its 28th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Breakfast and Fundraiser Monday at the Cecil Steakhouse in Harlem, where several awards were given to local alums from the historically Black, all-male college. The keynote speaker for the event was Assistant Commissioner at New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and Morehouse alum Dr. K. Torian Easterling. The Drum Major Award was given to Stewart Cornelius, Client Partner at Twitter, the Mountain Top Award was given to Aaron Holiday, Co-Founder and General Partner at 645 Ventures and the 2018 Dream Award was given to Jonathan Simon, Executive Director, Advancing Black Leaders, JPMorgan Chase & Co.
Manhattan Country School holds Martin Luther King, Jr. Day commemorative march
Manhattan Country School eighth-graders will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by taking to the streets of Manhattan. The theme of this year’s march is A New Revolution: Youth and Social Change, inspired by the quote “Every generation needs a new revolution,” attributed to Thomas Jefferson.
Martin Lither King, Jr. celebrated at the African Burial Ground
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. the African Burial Ground in Lower Manhattan hosted a film viewing of Ely Landau’s KING: A Filmed Record... Montgomery to Memphis. Historical audio and video featuring King are also being played throughout the day.
Demonstrators march through Newark in honor of Martin Luther King
The People's Organization For Progress (POP) is marching in a demonstration against the President Donald Trump's agenda. The march began at the Martin Luther King Statu in Newark. The theme of this year’s march is “The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. March Against Inequality, Racism, Sexism, Fascism, and War!”
