Bronx City Council Member Ritchie Torres wants to name a Bronx street after Army private Emmanuel Mensah, 26, who died during the December fire in Belmont that killed 13 people.
Torres made the announcement this week at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, which raised $300,000 for the families affected by the fire. He hopes to rename the corner of 187th Street and Prospect Avenue after Mensah.
According to reports, Mensah, who is a member of the Army National Guard, was home from boot camp for the holidays when the fire occurred. After getting out safely, Mensah went back into the building, saving six people. It’s believed he died of smoke inhalation.
